An ozone sauna is a non-invasive wellness service that combines medical-grade ozone (O3) with moist heat or steam in a dedicated cabinet. During a typical 30-minute session, the client sits inside the unit with the head positioned outside the enclosure to help avoid ozone inhalation. As body temperature rises and perspiration increases, skin pores open and ozone may be absorbed through the skin. Clients remain seated comfortably on a towel in a private setting.

Potential benefits described for ozone sauna therapy include support for detoxification and immune function. Proponents suggest ozone may help the body process and eliminate certain environmental exposures via perspiration, which may reduce overall metabolic burden. The combined effects of heat and ozone are also commonly cited for supporting circulation and tissue oxygenation, which may aid muscle recovery and promote healthier skin.

Although delivered as a non-invasive service, ozone sauna therapy has important safety considerations. The primary risk is accidental inhalation of ozone, a strong respiratory irritant. Exposure may cause coughing, chest tightness, throat or eye irritation, headache, or nausea. Higher or prolonged exposure can lead to more serious respiratory complications. To reduce risk, equipment should be operated according to manufacturer protocols, with the head kept outside the cabinet and the room adequately ventilated.

Some clients report temporary, short-term reactions after sessions, sometimes described as a “healing crisis” or Herxheimer-like reaction. These may include fatigue, headache, body aches, or mild fever-like symptoms. Localized skin irritation (itching or redness) can also occur and may indicate sensitivity or excessive ozone concentration.

Ozone sauna therapy may not be appropriate for everyone. It is generally avoided—or requires explicit clinician approval—for individuals with the following conditions:

·       Respiratory conditions: Uncontrolled asthma or severe COPD, due to heightened sensitivity to ozone exposure.

·       Cardiovascular conditions: Recent myocardial infarction (heart attack), unstable angina, or significant cardiovascular instability.

·       Genetic or blood disorders: G6PD deficiency (favism), active bleeding disorders, or severe anemia.

·       Other considerations: Pregnancy (especially the first trimester), uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, organ transplant recipients, or acute alcohol intoxication.

For safety, clients are typically advised to hydrate well before and after the session. Some practitioners also recommend avoiding high-dose antioxidant supplements (e.g., vitamin C) immediately before or after treatment, as antioxidants may counteract ozone’s oxidative mechanism.
