Candida is a harmless yeast (a type of fungus) that lives naturally in the human body. In a healthy person Candida is a commensal organism, one that lives without either benefitting or damaging the host. It lives symbiotically at tolerable levels in the gastrointestinal tract, genito-urinary tract, on the mucous membranes, and on the skin. In the right environment this harmless single celled yeast adapts into an invasive form with long root like structures. Risk factors for candidiasis include: hot weather, poor hygiene, restrictive clothing, altered flora as a result of antibiotic therapy, and immune suppression from immunosuppressive drugs, corticosteroids, pregnancy, diabetes and other endocrine disorders. Candida produces at least 79 toxic by-products known as mycotoxins— secondary metabolites of fungal origin that have pathogenic effects in the human body.
